Independence / foundation: After centuries of gradual decline, Laos came under the domination of Siam (Thailand) from the late 18th century until the late 19th century, when it became part of French Indochina.
The Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907 defined the current Lao border with Thailand. Laos got its independence in 1949 from France by the Franco-Lao General Convention.

- A great part of the country's population is Buddhist. Every Buddhist male in Laos is expected to become a monk for at least a short period in his life.
- The traditional greeting among locals is putting both hands together in a prayer-like manner known as the nop.
