Independence / foundation: Eritrea gained independence in 1993 but freedom was not achieved and the country remains under a very strict repressive regime. It is alse the source of many refugees fleeing to other parts of Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

- Eritrea has the 2nd lowest level of freedom of press, only after North Korea and is often referred to as the North Korea of Africa.
- The country has only had one president. Isaias Afwerki was elected in 1993 after independence and remains the only president the nation has seen.
- One of the oldest human skeletons was found in Eritrea in 1988. The fossil is the first intact hominid skull found and dates from the period between 1.4 million and 600,000 years ago.
