Independence / foundation: In the late 19th century, the British and French agreed to partition the middle regions of the Niger River, and France began its conquest of what would become the colony of Niger.
France experienced local resistance but established a colonial administration in 1922. After achieving independence from France in 1960, Niger experienced single-party or military rule until 1991 when political pressure forced General Ali Saibou to allow multiparty elections.

- The Niger River the country is named after is the third-longest river in Africa after the Nile and the Congo.
- Niger has one of Africa’s largest protected areas, the Air and Ténéré Natural Reserves. This sanctuary includes a wide range of wildlife and lanscapes, and is surrounded by the Sahara desert.
- Niger (together with Chad, Nigeria and Cameroon) hosts the Gerewol Festival. This unique festival is a beauty pageant where men of the Woodabee tribe compete to be chosen by unmarried women as their partners.
- The country is the sixth-largest producer of uranium in the world. Uranium serves as a fuel for nuclear power reactors.
