24 September 2021 – For Immediate Release
As travel returns, women favor intimate group trips to bucket list destinations with a purpose. In honor of International Women’s Day 2022 and in collaboration with the Tanzania Women Guide Foundation, Solo Female Travelers will take women to the top of Africa on an all-female guide, porter and trekker team.
After months of border closures and restrictions, Solo Female Travelers sees pent-up demand for travel and in particular, for small women-only tours that place more importance on their impact on the environment and on empowering both the traveler and local communities.
Gone are the days of travel hopping, of short, cheap trips that focus on checking off items on a bucket list; post-COVID travelers seek something more than filling their Instagram feed, and are more mindful of their travel decisions.
“Our members are swapping the highly edited photos you see on Instagram for the stories behind the photos, the self-growth and the learnings that they acquire on a solo trip by interacting with a different culture”, says Meg Jerrard, Co-Founder of Solo Female Travelers, a 115,000 member Facebook community.
Guiding trekkers to the summit of Kilimanjaro has traditionally been a male dominated world with fewer than 1% of the total guides being female. Glory Thobias founded Tanzania Women Guides Foundation to change this by providing training and showing a career in guiding as a viable option for women.
Solo Female Travelers Kilimanjaro expedition will start with a skills and cultural exchange with members of the Foundation in Arusha before hiking the highest peak in Africa. The women-only hike, will be made of an all-female trekker and guide team who will lead a maximum of 14 guests via the Shira Route to the roof of Africa on International Women’s Day.
“Many of our guests are independent women who have spent months socially distancing and are ready to do something meaningful with their travel budget; empowering other women is exactly what they are looking for”, explains Mar Pages, Co-Founder Solo Female Travelers.
She adds, “We will lift each other to the top and say cheers with champagne at 5,895m above sea level. It will be challenging, but as a team, I know we will all reach the top”.
To continue empowering women in tourism, a portion of the trip price will be donated to the Tanzania Women Guides Foundation to expand its efforts supporting female role models in tourism.
“The guides are the most important part of our itineraries and we are excited to be partnering with Glory and her team to celebrate the achievements of women around the world with such an empowering trip” says Pages.
