Official country name: Republic of Cyprus.
Etymology: The derivation of the name "Cyprus" is unknown, but the extensive mining of copper metal on the island in antiquity gave rise to the Latin word "cuprum" for copper.

Independence / foundation: Cyprus obtained independence in 1960 from the UK. Turkish Cypriots proclaimed self-rule on 13 February 1975 and independence in 1983, but these proclamations were recognized only by Turkey. The most recent round of negotiations to reunify the island were suspended in July 2017 after failure to achieve a breakthrough.
The entire island entered the EU on 1 May 2004, although the EU acquis, the body of common rights and obligations, applies only to the areas under the internationally recognized government, and is suspended in Northern Cyprus. However, individual Turkish Cypriots able to document their eligibility for Republic of Cyprus citizenship legally enjoy the same rights accorded to other citizens of EU states.

- Carnival is a unique celebration in Cyprus, with a blend of ancient Greek and later traditions. It's held every year around Easter season in the city of Limassol. Locals dress up in colourful costumes and masks to celebrate the Carnival.

- The level of experience traveling solo of the reviewer (beginner = <5 trips solo, Intermediate = 5 to 10 trips solo, Experienced = >10 trips solo).
- The age of the traveler.
- Whether they are a visitor or local.
- The date they were posted.
The safety scores range from 1 to 4 with 1 being the safest and 4 being the most dangerous for solo female travelers.
Thus, the lower the score, the safer the country.
