Interesting facts about Kiribati

- A great part of Kiribati was not mapped (by westerners) until the 19th century. At the same time, parts of the country were sealed off for decades due to nuclear tests on Christmas Island by the British Military from 1957 to 1963.

- Kiribati is the first country in the world to celebrate a New Year, it is 14 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and it is the only country in the world to spread across all four hemispheres (northern, southern, eastern and western).

- In 1999, two uninhabited Kiribati islands disappeared underwater. Kiribati is sufferting a climate crisis as a result of rising sea levels. To protect its inhabitants, the Kiribati Government purchased land in Fiji to relocate the population.
