Independence / foundation: Following Egyptian occupation early in the 19th century, the British established an Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, nominally a condominium, but in effect a British colony.
Military regimes favoring Islamic-oriented governments have dominated national politics since Sudan gained independence from Anglo-Egyptian co-rule in 1956. After 30 years of strict Islamic dictatorship under internationally indicted Omar Bashir, Sudan has been transitioning to democracy since 2019.

Interesting facts about Sudan
- Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, is located where the two main tributaries of the Nile meet: the Blue Nile and White Nile. You can see both mixing on a river cruise.
- One of Sudan's wonderful sites is the UNESCO-listed Sanganeb Marine National Park, a system of coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, beaches and islets, which is home to a wide range of marine life. The best part is that this Red Sea eco-system is almost devoid of tourism.
