Etymology: A combination of the Turkic words "uz" (self) and "bek" (master) with the Persian suffix "-stan" (country) to give the meaning "Land of the Free".

Independence / foundation: Russia conquered and united the disparate territories of present-day Uzbekistan in the late 19th century.

- Cotton in Uzbekistan is known as “white gold”. Cotton accounts for around 7% of the country’s exports.

- The country has witnessed one of the planet’s worst environmental disasters. The Aral Sea was once the world’s fourth-largest lake. Since the construction of a Soviet irrigation project in the 1960s, the lake has almost disappeared.

- Uzbekistan has the world’s largest open-pit gold mine, The Muruntau Gold Mine which produces 66 tonnes annually.
